Falls from ladders are one of the leading causes of injuries and fatalities on construction sites. Inspection and proper usage are key factors in preventing injuries due to falls.
Ensure the controls below are in place before using a ladder:
- Only use ladders that have been inspected and are in proper working order.
- Inspect ladders before each use.
- If a ladder has defects or cannot safely be used it should be taken out of service immediately, tagged, and repaired or replaced.
- Always choose the right ladder for the job and do not perform work if it cannot be done safely.
- Ensure step ladders have a spreader with an operating locking device.
- Straight ladders must extend 3 feet above the structure and be set up at a 4-1 angle.
- Always set up a ladder on a stable surface and avoid high-traffic areas.
- Be aware of clearance from opening doors.
- Ladders should not be set up on top of boxes, wood, or other material to gain height.
- Always stay centered on the ladder and avoid leaning to do work.
- Descend and move the ladder closer to the desired location.
- Maintain 3 points of contact with hands and feet when working from a ladder.
- Strap tools onto a belt rather than using one hand to carry them.
Areas to Inspect:
- Steps, top caps, rails, and rungs should not be bent or warped and free of grease, paint, or other substances.
- All manufacturer’s tags and labels should be visible and legible.
- All hardware on the ladder should be present and fastened in place.
- Ensure the feet of the ladder are in good condition and will provide a stable base.
- Ensure the ladder is free of any sharp surfaces or splintering.
- The ladder should open and set up smoothly and not rusty.
- Ensure the ladder is level and doesn’t wobble when set up.
- Ensure step ladders have a spreader with an operating locking device.
