Crushing and Pinch Point Injuries in Ready Mix Concrete Safety Talk

Ready mix concrete trucks have many moving parts; chutes, drums, hoppers, gates, and hydraulic systems; that pose daily risks for pinch point and crushing injuries. Whether you’re delivering to a job site, cleaning out at the plant, or performing maintenance, it’s critical to stay alert and follow proper procedures to protect yourself.

Chutes, Gates & Discharge Points

  • Keep hands and fingers clear of chute hinges, folding sections, and locking pins; use tools, not hands, to dislodge buildup or adjust components.
  • Make sure all safety devices (pins, latches, safety arms) are in place and functional before operating chutes or gates.
  • During clean-out, ensure the chute is locked out or secured using the manufacturer-approved methods; never clean under a suspended chute without proper support.

Drum & Hydraulic Systems

  • Never reach into or work near a moving drum. Even during cleanout, ensure the system is fully powered down and locked out.
  • Inspect hydraulic hoses and connections daily for wear or leaks; failure can result in sudden movement or collapse.
  • When performing maintenance near the drum or under the truck body, use mechanical locks, body props, or blocks to support raised components.
  • Avoid leaving the drum or truck components raised unnecessarily; this adds wear to hydraulics and creates crushing hazards.

Washout & Hopper Areas

  • Never enter the hopper or water tank area while the truck is running or without proper lockout procedures.
  • Use a shovel or scraper to clear concrete buildup, never hands or feet.
  • Make sure the hopper lid or access door is closed and latched before re-energizing equipment.

When Parking or Servicing the Truck

  • Place wheel chocks when parked at the plant, on-site, or during any service work, especially if on an incline.
  • Ensure all PTOs are disengaged, and the truck is placed in park with the brake set.
  • If work is being done around or under the truck, ensure all securement devices and safety arms are in use.

Conclusion:

  • Always assume components can move suddenly; stay clear unless properly locked out.
  • Keep a safe distance from other personnel during unloading or drum operation.
  • Report any malfunctioning safety pins, latches, or support devices immediately.
