Truck Inspection for Ready Mix Concrete

Ready mix drivers work in some of the most demanding conditions. With heavy loads, rotating drums, hydraulic systems, and frequent site travel, daily truck inspections are critical for your safety, the equipment’s performance, and the quality of the concrete. Take your time. A proper inspection can prevent breakdowns, site delays, and serious injuries.

Key Areas to Inspect:

Cab Area

  • Remove anything from the dash or windshield that could obstruct your view or create glare.
  • Check mirrors, seat belts, horn, and windshield wipers for function and clarity.

Hydraulics & Drum System

  • Inspect hydraulic hoses on the drum and chute systems for leaks, cracks, or wear.
  • Check the drum rotation and hydraulic controls for proper response.
  • Ensure the water system is working correctly and water levels are adequate.

Chutes & Accessories

  • Inspect chutes for buildup, cracks, and secure mounting.
  • Make sure extension chutes and pins are properly stored and not damaged.
  • Look for any loose bolts, hinges, or locking mechanisms on chute assemblies.

Load Securement & Gear

  • Ensure all tools and gear (e.g., washout hose, broom, shovels) are secured to prevent shifting or falling off.
  • Inspect chemical containers for secure placement and proper labeling.

Tires & Wheels

  • Check tire pressure, tread wear, and sidewalls for cuts or bulges.
  • Look for missing lug nuts, cracked rims, or damage from job site terrain.

Lighting & Safety Systems

  • Test headlights, brake lights, turn signals, backup lights, and beacons.
  • Ensure backup alarms and camera systems are working properly.
  • Confirm all safety interlocks and PTO disengage when required.

Fire Extinguisher & Emergency Gear

  • Make sure the fire extinguisher is charged, inspected, and mounted securely.
  • Verify that any spill kits or first aid kits are stocked and accessible.

Other Checks

  • Inspect mud flaps, steps, handrails, and grab handles for wear or damage.
  • Check for fluid leaks under the truck (oil, coolant, fuel, hydraulic fluid).

Found a Defect?

  • Document it on your inspection checklist.
  • Immediately report any safety-related issues to your supervisor.
  • Do not operate the truck if the defect could affect safety or load quality.
