Propane Safety Talk

Specific precautions should be considered when working with propane. Let’s look at some key areas to keep in mind and how to protect workers.

Common risks when working with propane:

  • Leaks
  • Flammability and Explosion
  • Freezing Liquid Burns
  • Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

What can we do to combat these risks?

  • Ensure all employees have been trained in detecting a leak and the procedures to take if one is detected.
  • All risks of spark or flame should be kept clear of propane tanks by at least 10 feet.
  • Know what carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms are (they can include dizziness, headache, fatigue, chest pain, nausea, vomiting and more).
  • Always ensure that proper ventilation is provided when working with, transporting, installing etc. propane.
  • Cylinders should always be kept upright and placed on stable surfaces.
  • Smoking must be prohibited anywhere near tanks.
  • Always refill tanks at an approved filling station. This should be outdoors with appropriate personal protective equipment worn.
  • Always wear the required personal protective equipment as designated by the company. This could differ depending on the task being performed and could include face shields, gloves, respiratory protection and protective clothing.
  • Tanks should be protected and secured when being transported and stored.
  • Ensure that pressure relief valves are clean and set to appropriate position.
  • Hoses, valves and regulators should be inspected regularly.
