Protección personal contra caídas

Framing can pose unique situations when protecting workers from falls, and there are many options for personal fall protection. It is important to make the best choice based on the employee using the fall protection as well as the job being done. As with any personal fall protection, we can simplify it by remembering ABC, which stands for anchor, body harness, and connector. In addition to the information provided in our Residential Fall Protection Safety Talk, we will look specifically at some options for framing.

Anchors:

This is the point that the worker will be tied off. It should be able to withstand 5000 lbs per person or twice the arrest force tied off.

Some Common Achor Options for Framers:

  • Hinged Reusable Metal Anchors – these anchors can be fastened directly to the framing, ridge, or header using approved screws or nails.
    • These anchors should only be attached to the roof peak or header and not on the side or underneath.
  • Cross Arm Strap, Choker, or Sling – this option is versatile as it can be tied off to beams, framing, wall plates, ridges, or other capable framing.
  • Truss Bar Anchor – this type of anchor is used for open framing such as in floors or trusses.

Body Harness:

This is the piece worn by the worker and connected to the fall protection system. There are many options available. As long as the harness is approved and labeled properly it is good to use. The most important factors are that they fit properly and are comfortable for the person wearing them.

Some Tips for Selecting a Harness:

  • Ensure the size is correct and that the D-Ring and leg straps are placed properly.
  • Selecting a harness that is easy to connect and disconnect will make it convenient and more likely to be used.

Connectors:

This is some form of connection that runs between the anchor and body harness.

Some Common Connectors for Framing:

  • Rope Grabs – used to move up and down a vertical line. They can be manual or mechanical.
  • Energy Absorber – decelerates the worker during a fall.
  • Self-Retracting Lifeline – This unit locks in place when sudden movement such as a fall happens.
