Hazard Recognition Toolbox Talk

Accidents in the workplace don’t just “happen.” They are typically caused by preventable errors or process defects. By breaking down tasks into workable functions and improving safety compliance incrementally, workers can gradually improve the risk of workplace accidents in an efficient and manageable way. Here’s how:

Don’t Take Safety Shortcuts

Workers are expected to achieve production goals. If they feel their job is on the line, they may prioritize output over safety to meet expectations. This decision can put others at risk and cause preventable accidents, which can be costly or potentially crippling for many small businesses.

Plan Ahead

Safe workplace standards (and meeting them) is everyone’s responsibility on a job site – regardless of title.  All employees should make it a habit to understand and evaluate the compliance of their environment and the work being completed. It helps to remember the saying: Planning prevents poor performance.

Identify Hazards

The following questions should be asked to help predict what could go wrong and how risks might be controlled:

  • Are the necessary materials available to perform the work?
  • Does everyone have the proper tools to perform the tasks at hand?
  • Are there enough workers to handle the job? Have they all had effective safety training?
  • Are environmental conditions, such as light, noise, and weather a factor?
  • Are there too many people in the area to work safely?
  • Have others on the job/in the work area been notified about the hazardous tasks or conditions?

Don’t wait for accidents to occur – think and plan ahead!
